The Regional Water Efficiency Program 2023 Year in Review
Introduction
RWA’s Water Efficiency Program (WEP) was created to help water providers in the greater Sacramento region work together to help their customers use water efficiently and to meet best management practices (BMPs) for urban water conservation and efficiency. These BMPs are essential elements of the Water Forum Agreement and the Central Valley Project Improvement Act. Furthermore, the WEP will assist water providers toward the successful implementation of the recently passed “Conservation Legislation” or Senate Bill 606/Assembly 1668 package.
Partnerships with water, wastewater, energy, storm water pollution control and other resource management entities are key features of the WEP. Through partnerships, the WEP brings a cost-effective approach to customer focused water efficiency activities through economies of scale.
Developed through the cooperative efforts of the Regional Water Efficiency Program Advisory Committee (RWEPAC), comprised of local water provider staff, the WEP’s water efficiency activities like public outreach campaigns, rebate programs, school education and research studies offer many benefits to local water providers and to their customers. Additionally, this is highly effective in attracting grant funding to increase water efficiency in the region and has secured $15 million in funding since the start of the program in 2003.
Program Activities and Accomplishments
Be Water Smart is an award-winning public outreach- and school education-focused program sponsored by RWA’s Water Efficiency Program. The program’s customer facing website, BeWaterSmart.info, is a comprehensive regional resource for water efficiency information about using water wisely.
In addition, RWA and local water suppliers provide a growing array of customer services and rebates to improve water efficiency for households and businesses. By improving water efficiency we all save energy, reduce air and water pollution, reduce the use of costly toxic chemicals and stretch our water supply.
